I've heard she is dating Michael Phelps, so at least she isn't against smoking weed. That is one for two. I'm torn on this one guys. What strange days. Who would have ever guessed there would come a day when the three biggest political issues on all of our minds are gay marriage, torture and legalizing MJ (screw the economy!).

interesting about spain, guess franco really squashed the catholcsim out of them. also interesting about south africa.

what about the UK? or Australia?

Wow, that's really shitty about DOMA. That will take years to undo.

Oddly, I found this old book on the street this morning, The Revolutionary Theme in Contemporary America. It was published in 1967. One of the essays is about the huge cultural differences between the US and Canada.

Interesting in light of this discussion. And then Mexico and the rest of the Catholic world, that's all really weird territory. Italy?

What about Asia? Contemporary Japan? Or Russia?

Same-sex marriage is legal in seven countries: Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, Spain and Sweden. And parts of the US, of course. Israel and France recognize such marriages performed elsewhere.

Also, I believe that in the European Union, civil unions between same-sex partners are enough to allow one partner to keep his or her foreign-born partner in the country. Which is not the case in the U.S. in any state, thanks to DOMA.
