UPDATE: so it's been bugging me for a week. i wasn't sure if "where do i begin (theme from love story)" was the song i really meant to reference in this post. so i downloaded it. it does speak to "phantom," but it wasn't the song i was thinking of. after consulting the part of my brain dedicated to 7th grade orchestra for about 20 minutes more i realized i had really meant to compare the song to the piano part from "nadia's theme (the young and the restless)." whew. now i can finally sleep easy for the first time in seven days.

well, i don't think "masculine" is about being sexed male -- i use it to identify a certain rock and roll swagger that traces to hendrix and jagger and earlier. loads of boy singers don't play it up, lots of girls do. think of patti smith wearing her dylan mask.

Ah, I stand corrected. Anyway, we all skip rope from time to time (sounds like a naughty euphemism, but isn't).

I thought Feist rocked out more live than on record, but didn't interpret her energy in performance as particularly "masculine." It makes me wonder: is it usually viewed as masculine when a woman rocks? That would be depressing.
