Thursday playlist: When we get together, it’s always hot magic – Mix ’08

It’s that time, it’s that time! Time for a year-end mix. Download is here.

Everyone I know has her or his own special way of making one of these. To paraphrase a poet close to Governor Blago’s heart, “They work their work, I mine.”

I like to make a mix that sounds good to my ear: not the best songs of the year, not the songs I listened to the most, but ones that I like that also seem to go well together.

I hope you like it.

1.) “Blooming Youth, 176b” – Rayna Gellert and John Paul Jones,
from Help Me to Sing: Songs of the Sacred Harp
2.) “Rockist Part 1” – School of Language
3.) “Gold, Tan, Peach and Grey” – Bodies of Water
4.) “Wicked Wisdom” – Of Montreal
5.) “The Storm” – High Places
6.) “Shout Me Out” – TV on the Radio
7.) “Owl” – Crystal Antlers
8.) “Death Take Your Fiddle” – Spiritualized
9.) “Old World New World” – Mia Doi Todd
10.) “You Remind Me of Something” – Bonnie “Prince” Billy
11.) “Meadowlarks” – Fleet Foxes
12.) “Another World” – Antony and the Johnsons
13.) “Senses on Fire” – Mercury Rev
14.) “A Falling Through” – Ray LaMontagne
15.) “The Pathetic Anthem [Demo]” – Mugison
16.) “Midnight Man” – Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
17.) “What Needs Must Be” – Dead Meadow
18.) “El Vistado” – Juana Molina
19.) “Winter Sleep” – Faun Fables
20.) “Ma Bonny Lad” – Rachel Unthank & the Winterset*
21.) “Wired for Light” – School of Seven Bells

*This is the one slight cheat: The Bairns was released in 2007 in the UK, but not until 2008 in the US.

Hooray, Tim! I can’t wait to listen to the mix. (p.s. Juana Molina has been blowing my mind.)

What an awesome playlist! There are so many artists on here that I had never heard. I can’t wait to burn it to a CD and make this my new car music. Thanks!

Ooh, that just makes me sick that he bogarted Tennyson (who is a super guilty pleasure of mine even though I know I’m supposed to think he’s a big cheeseball.) I know Odysseus is being a little bit of a jerk in that poem, but to compare himself??!!! Dang.

Thanks for the mix!!! It’s downloading as I type. I already know that second track (since you brought it to record club) is quite a mindblower.

  4. I’m locked and loaded. Thanks for the tunes.
