Thursday Favorites: Google 2001

In honor of its 10th anniversary, Google has made available its oldest search index, from January 2001. Meaning, you can search here and find exactly — and only — the web pages that were available on that subject at that time.

If you 2001-Google “Paris Hilton,” for example, you get 1,440 hits, nearly all of which are for the hotel in the French capital. Today, you’ll find 62 million hits, most for the blonde heiress.

Or try “Barack Obama“: In 2001, he netted a whopping 671 hits. Today, more than 80 million.

If you 2001-Google “wikipedia,” you get 681 hits, the second of which says, “Welcome, o ye five initial members of wikipedia…”

Also, who knew that the iPhone — a “fully integrated telephone and Internet device with a built-in touch screen,” manufactured by InfoGear — existed way back then? Here’s a photo:

So, take a spin in 2001! Google yourself and your friends! And please share your greatest hits.

I got a hit! Does that mean Google deems me more qualified than hitless Sarah Palin, at least in 2001?

  6. Tim says:

Ah, yes! There’s that wise-ass email I sent to Pitchfork in response to a crap review of a Jon Langford and Sally Timms record. I’m so glad to be remembered this way.

and that darn drug and tobacco counselor who shares my name is also there.

so…why did they choose 2001 and not 1998…just not enough links? or did someone at google accidentally erase the indexes pre-2001?!!

  8. Scary-Go-Round has an awesome, awesome Friday playlist.
