West Coast record camp began with a trip down a desert road
to a beautiful house with a pool.

We discussed turntablism, record club policy and canine hegemony

Things can get kinda rulesy at record camp.

Biffy flew in from the cape and surprised us with his charming presence.

We formed a search party to locate more dice

there was a total eclipse… but then,

We had so much fun, we were sad to leave. We shall return!
P.S. Thanks to Swells and JZ for photos.

Playlists! We demand playlists!
Yeah, it looks like a huge amount of fun. I’d love to know what you were listening to, more specifically than “vinyl”.
I thought the first picture was an eyeball.
Wait, it’s not?
It is like a Magritte eyeball. Ceci n’est une oeil.
Does anyone know of good, free sound mixing/loop making software? I have Audacity, but I am looking for something that more geared for music construction using found sound.
The thing about Record Camp is that it’s so much fun that it’s difficult to focus and sit down for the kind of intent listening that happens at Record Club. We managed one round, late on Saturday night. Mostly, we listened to mixes that people had made for the occasion, and there were a few dj sets, but there were many distractions — playing dice, making another round of calimochos, having a snack, engaging in delightful conversation, soaking in the hot tub, etc. I dj’d for a while during a particularly raucous game of dice, but couldn’t for the life of me recreate the list. That said, I think tomorrow’s Thursday playlist will be the single round we did do.
open mike the whole darn thing next time.
then you can print the transcripts of your conversations along with the playlists.
Rogan: I’ve been wanting to try lloopp. It’s free and open-source. Runs in Max/MSP, which has a free runtime. Looks like you’d use Audacity for loop cutting, then drop them into lloopp to mash up. (I use Ableton Live myself, but it’s expensive.)
5: I use Soundedit 16, which is either free or pretty close to being free. It’s old — and intended for editing video sound — but I find that it gets the job done with some interesting results.
Swells is posting our one true record club round as tomorrow’s playlist; and I have to say, I don’t know if it was the 24 hours of constant drinking, the desert air, or what, but it’s my favorite round of all time.
I love the Bonnie Tyler shout outs throughout….Turn around bright eyes…Clearly, I’m having crack dice withdrawl.
I propose Crack Dice night.
Bonnie Tyler
Ok, I always dread that everyone will already know about Hurra Torpedo and I’ll come off as stuck in the past by linking to them. But every time, somebody turns out not to know about the greatest-ever rendition of Total Eclipse of the Heart! So weird!
12. O.M.G.!!! That is so awesome! That’s 1st tier musicianship in my book. Especially the pants falling down.
See, every time! This is the song I think of nowadays when I see somebody quoting “Once upon a time there was light in my life”, or “Once upon a time I was falling in love”, or “Forever’s gonna start tonight”… That lead singer’s voice is totally seductive. And yeah, the butt cracks are a nice touch too.
A movie was shot of Hurra Torpedo’s US tour a couple of years ago, but it has not been produced yet. We can only hope…
I await with baited, um, pants.
OK, you’re killing me here. The greatest weekend away ever, PLUS Bonnie Tyler theme music. What’s a west coast girl gotta do to get an invite to this super-exclusive event?
12: woo. that hurra torpedo performance, no doubt, is influenced by the muppets. here’s some more bonnie tyler. check out the fancy camera work.
Damn. I was getting all into the Bonnie Tyler but then I had to get back to work.
LP, I would have loved for you and RB to be there! You were sorely missed. But weren’t you all busy being proud an’ shit?
