7. El Guincho - Palmitos Park
8. The Black Angels - You In Color
9. Magik Markers - Empty Bottles
10. Beach House - Hear Of Chambers

So your answer is Big Blood, M83, and the Black Angels? You’re going to be sent back for a remedial semester of Pop 101.

Kidding. Looks like a great mix. And Big Blood, how I love them. Now if my boss would leave so I could listen to it.

I especially liked the High Places and Fleet Foxes tunes. I also liked the Atlas Sound number but feel like I may need to be at the Cali Mocho (red wine and coke) phase of my evening before I could fully appreciate it.

Thanks for the new handle, and the correct spelling of my favorite drink. Now if I could only read Spanish…

    correct spelling

Actually, correct spelling is kalimoxto — calimocho is a Spanish bastardization.

I love this mix, E. Tan. And in your defense, I don’t know what Dave’s talking about–that new M83 album is pure 80s pop!

And, on our side note here: I’m really proud of my state today. Perhaps this makes up for the fact that we elected the Governator…

Jeremy is right. I was thinking about their other album.

and dave, compared to your WTF? playlist… which is a typical playlist for me …. this is mm bop : )

I, for one, was shocked by how mainstream it was, all things considered. no ripped-from-vinyl polka music? is this the e. tan i know?

nice vibe, though. the tracks i didn’t know — 1, 5, 6, and 12 — situated the more familiar stuff nicely. oh, and i hadn’t listened to the new m83 yet. what a switch from their last album!

i finally got the big blood. between the vitamin c cover and this track (is this live?), damn i like these folks.

so what do people think about this muxtape format — the stream-only bit, no files to download? it certainly makes putting up a playlist easy. but it only really works for readers bound to their computers while they listen, which probably applies to most readers of blogs.

i forgot to add my prediction that el guincho will be one of our party albums of the summer. (hard to see that one coming, wasn’t it?)

ps I listened to this instead of Trouble this morning while I was working, so I went back to listen to Trouble later in the afternoon. She played this great mashup of John Cale and LCD Soundsystem. You can link to the track from her accuplaylist. It’s near the beginning of the third set.

it’s an *amazing* cover. you can find it back on the very first TGW Thursday Playlist ever, which was also curated by Mr. Tan.

Going back to look at that I see that we weren’t actually putting up tracks in the beginning.

you can listen to big blood’s cover of vitamin c here

true, the playlist is predictable. i thought it would be a nice change though. can’t be mudboy CD-Rs all the time.

(Just started listnin — This Big Blood song is pretty fantastic, at least until the vocal starts. Maybe the vocal will grow on me.* I never heard of this group before.

*Or possibly it will not. The instrumental parts are awesome either way.

it’s only predictable from a certain frame of reference. #20 could also read: “I didn’t know half the shit on here.”

    Hey E. Tan,
I liked today’s mix a lot too. More of the same, please. Fwiw, I’ve also been enjoying Atlas Sound for a few months (i was obsessed with ‘river card’–played it like 5 or 6 times a day. cukoo.) So i heard they are touring with El Guincho this summer–mostly in europe unfortunately. imo, that would be one of the best shows of the summer. they actually have 4 dates in North America: Toronto, Montreal, Boston, and NYC. And of course the NYC date is exactly while trix and i are away from the east coast. Damn the gods! Anyway, BW, to your comment about summer album, we just dl’d Quiet Village. lovely very late night music–you can’t beat an album with a song called “too high to move.” Can imagine this album playing this summer while some of our very own TGWers do their best impression of that sentiment. thanks again for some new songs, G.Tan. xo.

I like this format. In the past I’ve dl’d the files, and still have the folders on my desk sitting unlistened to.

Great mix, esp. on this most beautiful day her in PoOr.

30 — don’t feel too bad, farrell. we’ll miss it too. which sucks, b/c the show is at the seaport, which means they may be hanging at jason’s bar afterward.

#28: I caught The Cherry Blossoms a couple years ago, playing with Josephine Foster. Quite a show! Looking forward to the next mix, er, mux.

P.S. E.Tan, et al., this may be a poppier mix, but it didn’t seem all that predictable to me. I still hadn’t heard of almost half the artists. Maybe I need to listen to FMU more.

P.P.S. In re downloading vs. mux tapes: the convenience of downloading and being able to transfer the songs is preferable to my music-lover side; the mux tape appeals to the paranoid and moral me.

The Thursday Playlist thread seemed like a good place to post this: Daniel Lanois, who produced Peter Gabriel and U2 among others, and who has collaborated frequently with Brian Eno, has just made all of his material available on his website.

    Go here for the downloads:

    http://redfloorrecords.com/DanielLanois.htm

And E. Tan: I enjoyed the muxtape a lot. I get a lot from my friend Warren Ellis, but this one was more along the lines of my own preferences.

30: Farrell. I saw El Guincho around the corner from here at the Union Pool Hall.. One Spanish man, a drum, and a shit load of cool samples/loops. If you get a chance to see his show, do it!

Actually, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing most of the bands on this playlist. Except for Big Blood. And it seems they’re making the coolest shit at out of them all. God, I can’t even express the love i have for this band……

sorry, my gushing love for big blood continues:

i woke up this morning and was divinely directed to the latest 2008 big blood album

or support the band and buy the handmade CDR while you can. their previous CDRs are all sold out… just sayin.

also, their other band fire on fire just signed to young god. website only ep is sold out, but there’s a forthcoming album on the way… some new tracks are up on their myspace.

You’ve got to go visit catandgirl.com and make your way through her archives. Today’s strip is actually not great, so it’s a funny day to have to recommend her; she generally shines with the brilliance of a thousand moons. Here is a great one from her archives: The Gates of Compromise.

(Also worth browsing is her Donation Derby, which works like this: if you donate $5 or more to her tip jar, she will draw you a cartoon of how she spent the money. I gave her $25 a while back and she used it to copy the draft of her new book. )
