In a world where bits of information travel freely over vast networks of tubes…
Posted on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, under Movies and Sounds

I heard that kids these days have started using their computers for crazy purposes, like making music and setting it to video. It turns out that with a bit of software and a few spare hours, I, too, can make my own movies, which I then can upload to YouTube for the whole world to see. This seems a bit freaky to me, but then again I’m getting old.

Not sure if this counts as our site’s first vlog (since I’m not sure if it counts as a vlog), but it’s definitely our first original-music-plus-remixed-video multimedia post. The gray-market digital global commons fucking ROCKS. Music and video by myself and E. Tan (video based on this one). If you find the music listenable, download the mp3 here.

That was all kinds of weird, but so is the original. Is that an actual commercial or has someone already reprocessed it?

Is this influenced by the remake of Willy Wonka?

Yeah, the original video is also weird. I think it is itself a remix of several Japanese McDonald’s commercials.

    E. and I made the song (from a pedal-steel guitar sample), then he remembered seeing the original video and we played it over that. It was remarkably easy to download the original from YouTube, pop it into iMovie, cut it up some more, and pop our music into it. I think if I were a teenager this is how I would spend all my free time.

    Žižek! Broadcast yourself!

I know it’s kind of overwhelming to listen to the song (especially watching it with the video) but there was some intense duet improvisation going on with myself and the computer midi sounds. Making music is so much fun.

Exactly. In the future, everyone will have their own Japanese McDonald’s remix.

I love that Bryan is trolling YouTube for Japanese McDonald’s remixes.

I didn’t have to troll too far … it popped up as a recommended video alongside your original.

I found myself watching that red spot on the top of Ronald’s forehead. Is that hanging hair or a spot of skin showing?
