Not to be reproduced: New Year’s open thread

Rene Magritte, La Reproduction Interdit / Not to be Reproduced (1937)

On January 1, 2011, I was lucky enough to wake up in the home of dear friends, with whom I had joyfully celebrated the night before (at a party complete with bicoastal buddies, disco dancing, and a “gorgeous gateau”). As we eased into the morning, thoughts turned to the future. One of us proposed the following questions for discussion:

1. What do you want to draw towards you in the coming year?

2. What do you want to let go?

To these, I’d add:
3. What insight/realization have you had in the past year that you want to share?

So let’s hear it, Whatsiters. Tell us what you’ve learned recently, and how things will be different in 2011.

OK, so no one is prepared to be as mushy or sincere as me on the morning of Jan. 1. That’s cool. As long as I can get some of that platonic Scotty love later this week (openly expressed, of course). Plus sushi.

  8. A White Bear says:

I like to start off every new year with a reading of The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. If you’d like to play along, it’s like psych-up jams for the soul: http://www.levity.com/alchemy/blake_ma.html

  9. A White Bear says:

(I am not a Satanist, but it’s a good cure for overthinkingism. Have I mentioned that I have an interview in two days that I’ve been looking forward to for eight years?)

  10. Rachel says:

AWB, congratulations! We should talk. I am available for psych up / decompression cocktail / whatevah.

  11. Dave says:

2011 is about cooking things in my new Dutch oven. Lentil soup tonight.

  12. lane says:

AWB, always looking for those cures! It’s so nice having gotten to know you, and now that u are in far away bushwick, i hope your committment to TGW grows even stronger . . .

2011, hm. Some friends I sometimes Thanksgive with have a Thanksgiving ritual that seems more appropriate to New Year’s: we go out to the reservoir near their house and DA lights some leaves in an iron cauldron thingy and you write something you want to be done with in the next year and burn it. Last time I Thanksgave, I burned “self doubt.” This year for some reason I just wrote “doubt.”

Also I would like to lose 15 pounds.

  14. Rachel says:

Mr. Smearcase, I have no doubt that the new year will bring good things for you. p.s. you are perfect already, obvs. You are Smearcase!

  15. Rachel says:

Unless that was sarcasm. (So hard to tell with Monsieur S.)

    2011 goals:
Not being too late to comment threads.
And seeing more of a certain beautiful craftsman house with certain beautiful people in a certain beautiful state just north of here.
