Best Music Videos of 2006

In July I finally finished my residency and got a real job, which meant I had my own office and a nice T1 computer connection. Ah, the American dream. When I'd have a patient no-show, I could become a Web-surfing maniac. Besides the obvious media browsing — music/movie reviews, politics, porn, blogs, YouTube, I became quite versed in the best of music videos. And so, I offer up the fruits of my hard work: the 10 best music videos of 2006. In no particular order. I was initially inclined to start this list with a slow careful explanation of my aesthetic criteria. And then write a commentary (a la Pitchfork) about each one. But then I thought I'd rather hear those things from you — Time magazine people of the year — dear TGW readers. So without further ado, the videos: Let the arguing begin. Bring it on, Ruben.

Wait–so you mean all those hours I’ve sat waiting in the doctor’s office–and believe me, this crazy year there have been a lot of them–this is what they’re really doing behind the scenes? Well, la di frickin’ da, Mister Doctor Man. And you may be a fancy professional with a T1 connection, but as a teacher whose school hasn’t even upgraded her to OSX yet, I can’t even watch your picks with my OS9!! So, I’ll have to vote for the only one I’ve seen, OK Go, since I doubt anything else could top it anyway. Perhaps you can screen all them for us when we’re hung over on New Year’s Day and we can have a proper vote then.

  2. Dave says:

Dude, what’s with the old-skool illiterate html?

  3. bryan says:

that’s what i said. those links are so damn ugly i didn’t even want to click them.

  4. bryan says:

ps Chinese Translation is my favorite, even though I haven’t watched all the rest. It’s probably the only music video I watched this year, so I was lucky it was a good one. Thanks to whoever sockpuppeted the recommendation originally back in the comments section on another thread somewhere.

  5. J-man says:

“sockpuppeted”? Is this a preview of buzz words 2007?

  6. Tim Wager says:

Dude, sockpuppets or so, like October or something – sockpuppet. (Jen, I’m at the store.)

And that was Farrell himself who sockpuppeted the vid before. He can manage that, but he can’t type a href . . . ./a.

  7. Dave says:

Lots of retro. Loved the Malajube and the New Order. And yeah, that M.Ward is fantastic.

  8. Dave says:

Clever, also, to write a post with about 150 words that takes an hour to read.

  9. Dave says:

I’m takin’ these comments to 100 all by myself.

  10. Socky the Puppet says:

    Me too!

  11. Tim Wager says:

Dave, that’s a funny joke, but as a puppeteer you’ve got a lot to learn.

  12. farrell fawcett says:

    Hey Tim,

How did you know it was me sockpuppeting the m ward video way back when?

  13. farrell fawcett says:

    And dear steph,

No, doctors don’t make you wait because they’re surfing the web. When they know there’s a patient in the waiting room, that’s when they start making phone calls and reading magazines. there’s a strict rational order to these things, silly.

And yes, i’d be happy to screen videos at the TGW fete. We don’t have a T1 cable line, but you tube comes in quite nicely.

  14. farrell fawcett says:

    Dave and Bryan,

Yes, html, i know. not pretty. but sometimes embedding links is just so damn tedious. Hey, and atleast it’s not a picture of a burrito.

  15. farrell fawcett says:

where are you? one of my top video picks was BECK. where’s the umbrage brother/

  16. farrell fawcett says:

And no one wants to argue the fact that the new order and sigur ros videos were from 2005? Or that the last two videos were just SNL performances?

(fwiw, the performances were better than any of the other true-to-life “videos” that those two boys put out this year. And actually JT’s performance at the victoria’s secret fashion show was actually better than SNL, but all the youtube versions were grainy and badly edited. But, damn can that boy dance.)

  17. Tim Wager says:

Now, Farrell, if I let you and everybody else in on that, I wouldn’t be able to get away with the occasional sockpuppetry of my own, would I?

Haven’t had the time or right connection today to watch the JT vid, but no matter how good it is, it’s no “D*ck in a Box.” Oh yeah!

  18. Ruben Mancillas says:

I haven’t seen any of these videos but I promise to give them a try. Thanks for the hints.

Sheepish but proud to admit that I don’t think I’ve watched an entire music video in years. Oh sure, I can talk the finer points of that Last Christmas clip but am a bit lost technically and otherwise with some of the stuff I see mentioned above. I do love the New Order song, maybe I’ll start there.

As for Beck, what can I say? Even a Mall Santa can’t be angry all of the time. Sorry to disappoint.

I haven’t heard any of his stuff in years. I read the reviews. There’s this great site I like to go to where he is worshipped like Xenu himself. And now I can check out his video. Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

OK, how about this? I was reading some entertainment-weekly-esque magazine when I was transfixed by the one page photo spread about Beck and his latest CD with the DIY sticker art. So far, so good I suppose but celebrity media being what it is I had to be treated to what some vaguely cool B list types had made with their stickers. The idea that I was supposed to compare and contrast Jason Lee’s artistic chops with Jenna Elfman’s was almost as silly as my man Beck’s outfit with the silver lame’ tie.

Darn it, I was doing so good there for awhile…

  19. #14 — especially when the 7 and Cokes have been flowing, I suppose. Damn, you’d be lucky to capitalize the Time in Time magazine under those circumstances …

  20. p.s. I wonder if we should schedule a couple workshops for the gathering: I know I would love for Dave to teach me how to embed YouTube links!

  21. Lisa Tremain says:

hey, i love me some JT, but was disappointed to see that the link here has been removed because it “was used without permission.” hopefully NBC’s not comin’ after you Farrell.

thank goodness i got my Timberlake fix with this link.
