For the next few weeks, I will be posting photos that I took when my brother and I gained access to a recently deceased relative’s house. The house itself is vastly important to my brother and me — we spent several happy summers there with our grandparents. Our days were most often spent at the public swimming pool, and our evenings were usually capped off by a trip in the Ford sedan to the local Carvel for soft-serve ice cream cones.
We hadn’t been inside the house for over 25 years, and were amazed that much of what we remember of our grandparents’ possessions were still inside. Though much was destroyed through years of neglect, we were both transported.

That thicket of window decals is so great, so comforting. Austere minimalism in decorating is overrated, I think.
Scotty, I can’t wait to see the rest of these. Both my grandparents’ homes are no more, and I so wish I had more photos of how they were back when we spent summers and Christmases there in the ’70s and ’80s. How fantastic for you to get a chance to step back in time!
Bowlers, birders, Olympics fans . . . a very interesting mix.
Also, I love how the house is anthropomorphized in your photo. It looks just like a face, somewhat world weary, but still here, still holding up.
Yep, the house’s face is very engaging — especially I like the jaunty tilt of the porch awning. Are those stickers on the inside or outside of the window? Is the window in the back of the house?
